A mystery dumpling squishy is a slow-rise foam toy shaped like a steamed bao bun, sealed inside a small steamer basket so that you do not know which colour or finish you have until you lift the lid. That sentence covers the product. This guide covers everything people ask us after they read it: what the foam is, how random the draw really is, what the tiers mean, and which one to buy first.
The two things that matter: the filling (slow-rise foam, not water beads) and the draw (blind box versus known colour). Get those right and the rest is preference.
In this guide
The Toy Itself: A Slow-Rise Foam Bao
Take the lid off and you find a bun about 4 inches / 10 cm across with a pleated top, sitting in its basket. Press it flat and it takes roughly two seconds to puff back into shape. That delay is the defining property of a real dumpling squishy and the main thing separating it from a bouncy stress ball or a gel toy.
What it is made of
Slow-rise polyurethane foam, the same broad material family as memory foam. Press it and the cell structure collapses; release it and air works back through the cells over a second or two. Good foam recovers fully every time for six to twelve months of normal use before the rebound starts to soften. We go deeper on the material in water beads vs slow-rise foam.
What it is not
A second product uses the same name: a clear silicone dumpling filled with water beads. It stretches rather than rises, and it is the version that the US CPSC recalled in September 2026 because the beads expand if swallowed. Nothing we sell contains water beads or gel. If you are buying elsewhere, check the filling before the colour.
How the Mystery Blind Box Works
Every dumpling ships sealed in its steamer. For a mystery or random colour listing, the basket is pulled from mixed stock and we do not look inside before it goes in the box. You get a dumpling; you do not get to choose which one.
What "random" actually means here
- No colour requests. We cannot honour "any colour but pink". The pool is the pool.
- Duplicates are possible. Order two random singles and you may get two of the same. It is uncommon but it happens, and it is where trading starts.
- Pools are separate. A glitter blind box only draws from glitter finishes. A classic blind box only draws from matte colours. The standard random draws from everything.
- No published odds. Manufacturers do not release drop rates. Every rarity chart online, including ours, is a community estimate.

Mystery vs Known Colour: Which Listing to Choose
Not every dumpling is a blind box. Most of our range is also sold as a named colour, in the same sealed steamer, so the packaging experience is identical but the outcome is not a surprise.
| Mystery / random | Known colour | |
|---|---|---|
| You want | The reveal, the hobby | A specific colour or finish |
| Duplicates | Possible | Never, you chose it |
| Price | Usually slightly lower | Standard single price |
| Best for | First-timers, kids, gifts for collectors | Desk pieces, completing a set, matching decor |
Our honest steer: if you are buying a gift and the recipient already collects, go mystery. If you are buying for a desk or for yourself and you know you want gold, buy gold. Working through blind boxes to pull one specific finish always costs more than buying it outright.
The Finishes You Can Pull
Matte / classic
Solid colours: white, red, pink, blue, light purple. The white is the one that looks like an actual steamed bun and the one adults keep on desks. Matte shows the pleat movement most clearly.
Glitter
Shimmer suspended through the foam, not printed on the skin, so it cannot flake. Gold, red, blue, mint, emerald, purple, pink. Glitter films best and sits higher in rarity charts. See the glitter collection.
Gradient, clear, bubble, zebra, fluffy
Newer moulds and finishes: two-tone gradients, a translucent clear, a bubble version with firm foam beads under a smooth skin (not water beads), zebra stripes and a fluffy flocked version. These are where most of the "is this rare?" questions come from; they are in the rare collection for that reason.
Seasonal and giant
Short-run editions like the Halloween pumpkins and ghost, and the giant, which is the same foam scaled up. Sizes are compared in our size guide.
What a Mystery Dumpling Squishy Costs
- Single blind box: $13.99–$14.99 for standard and glitter pools, $17.99–$21.99 for fluffy and seasonal pools.
- Two-pack: $23.99–$24.99, two sealed steamers, colours at random.
- Six-colour glitter set: $59.99, one of each colour, no randomness, cheapest per dumpling.
- Giant: $34.99, about 7 inches, random colour.
Anything far below those numbers from an unfamiliar seller is worth a second look. The trend pulled in a lot of counterfeits, some of which failed safety testing. Seven checks before you buy covers what to look at.
Which One to Buy First
- Curious, no strong preference: one standard random-colour blind box.
- You already know you want sparkle: the glitter blind box.
- Buying for two people, or want a spare to trade: a 2-pack.
- You want it on a desk and never want it to look like a toy: the white matte, bought as a known colour.
Whatever you pick, read the care guide once. Most "it stopped rising" messages we get come down to heat, sunlight or over-stretching, all avoidable.
Start with one. Most people do not stop there, but one is the honest starting point.
Shop mystery dumplingsFrequently Asked Questions
What is inside a mystery dumpling squishy?
A slow-rise polyurethane foam bun, about 4 inches across, sealed in a small steamer basket with a lid. There are no water beads, gel or liquid in a genuine slow-rise dumpling.
How random is a mystery dumpling blind box?
Fully random within its pool. Colours cannot be requested, duplicates across multiple boxes are possible, and no manufacturer publishes drop rates.
Can I choose the colour of a mystery dumpling?
Not in a mystery listing. Most colours are also sold as known-colour singles in the same sealed steamer if you want a specific one.
What age are mystery dumpling squishies for?
Ages 3 and up, with adult supervision for younger children because of small parts. They are popular with adults as desk fidgets too.
How long does a dumpling squishy last?
With normal use and kept away from heat, sunlight and sharp edges, the foam holds its rebound for roughly six to twelve months before it starts to soften.
